The 2 x 4 ft banner: what it's good for and what it costs
The best-selling small banner. Where a 24 x 48 inch banner works, how far away it can be read, how many grommets it needs, and what seven printers charged for one in October 2026.
A 2 x 4 ft banner is 24 inches tall and 48 inches wide: about the size of a single folding-table top stood on its edge. It is the smallest size most banner printers treat as a "real" banner, and one printer's sales data puts it as the single most-ordered banner size over a year. That popularity is not about impact. It is about fit: a 2 x 4 goes almost anywhere, costs little, and is easy to carry, hang and store.
It is also the size people most often regret when they needed something bigger. This guide helps you tell which situation you are in.
What a 2 x 4 ft banner is good for
The 2 x 4 works best where people are close: within about 30 to 60 feet, walking rather than driving.
- Indoor event signs: registration desks, check-in tables, "Photo booth this way", room names at a conference.
- Table fronts: a 4-foot folding table, or centered on a longer table with space for your hands and a card reader on each side.
- Storefront windows and doors: "Now hiring", "Open", hours or a seasonal offer, read by people on the sidewalk.
- Party decorations: above a cake or gift table, on a door, on the front of a kids' sports team tent.
- Small yards and porches: an open house, a garage sale, a "Welcome home" on a porch rail at a house close to the street.
- Classrooms, offices and gyms: team names, motivational lines, a sponsor sign on a scorer's table.
Where it struggles: on a fence by a road, across a storefront fascia, or anywhere a driver is your audience. There, the letters a 2 x 4 can hold are simply too small, and a 3 x 6 ft or 3 x 8 ft banner earns its extra cost.
How far away can a 2 x 4 be read?
After a margin of an inch or two all round and room for a second line, the main line on a 2 x 4 can comfortably be about 4 to 6 inches tall, more if you use one short word.
| Main-line capitals | Comfortable reading (1 in per 25 ft) | Glance reading (1 in per 10 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in | about 100 ft | about 40 ft |
| 5 in | about 125 ft | about 50 ft |
| 6 in (one short line) | about 150 ft | about 60 ft |
The "glance" column is the one that matters for anyone moving past quickly, which is why a 2 x 4 is a walking-distance sign. A line of 12 to 14 characters at 5-inch capitals in a bold sans-serif font needs roughly 40 inches of width, which is most of the banner. Shorter wording lets you go bigger. Our letter height calculator does the arithmetic for any distance.
Grommets and hanging
A 2 x 4 is light, so it rarely needs many fixing points. At the common spacing of one grommet in each corner and then no more than every 24 inches, a 2 x 4 gets 6 grommets: three along each long edge, with the middle ones centered. For indoor use, four corner grommets are plenty.
Printers handle this differently, and the difference shows up in the price:
- Some include hems and grommets by default (1 Day Banner, BannerBuzz, Signs.com, Best of Signs in our survey).
- Some list a lower price with no grommets and charge for them as an add-on (UPrinting, BuildASign, Vistaprint, Staples in our survey).
If you only need to tape the banner to a window or clip it to a tablecloth, grommet-free is fine. For a fence or a porch rail, add them. Our grommet calculator shows the count for any spacing, and the grommets, hems and pole pockets guide explains when each is worth paying for.
What a 2 x 4 ft banner costs (October 2026)
We checked the public price of a single-sided 13 oz vinyl banner, quantity 1, on each printer's own configurator on October 26, 2026, before coupon codes, shipping and tax.
| Printer | Price shown | Regular price | Finishing in that price |
|---|---|---|---|
| BannerBuzz | $17.09 | $28.48 (automatic 40% sale) | Metal grommets |
| BuildASign | $17.80 | $23.74 (automatic 25% sale) | No grommets (optional) |
| UPrinting | $19.75 | same | No hem or grommets (optional) |
| 1 Day Banner | $20.64 | same | Hem and grommets |
| Signs.com | $35.46 | same | Welded hem, grommets every 2 to 3 ft |
| Staples | $48.00 | same | Welded edge; 4 grommets +$6 |
| Best of Signs | $60.08 | same | Heat-welded edges, brass grommets |
Vistaprint does not list a 2 x 4 ft standard size; its nearest, 2.5 x 4 ft, was $19.99 on sale ($24.99 regular) without grommets. Walmart Photo's 2 x 4 banners ($21.96 to $24.96) are satin or polypropylene, not vinyl.
The spread is wide: the most expensive quote was more than three times the cheapest. Small banners carry a lot of fixed cost (handling, finishing, packing), so per square foot a 2 x 4 is the most expensive banner size you can buy. Sale prices change weekly, and shipping can add more than the banner itself on a small order. Compare delivered totals. Methodology and every source are in our banner price survey.
Layout that works on a 2 x 4
- One idea. "OPEN HOUSE" plus a time. "NOW HIRING" plus a web address. Not both.
- Fill the width. Size the main line until it nearly spans the banner, then add margins back.
- Bold, simple fonts. Thin scripts vanish at 40 feet.
- High contrast. Black on yellow, white on dark blue, dark red on white.
- Keep text 1.5 to 2 in from every edge so hems and grommets don't cut through letters.
Files: at 2 x 4 ft, 100 to 150 pixels per inch at full size is plenty, which means about 4,800 x 2,400 to 7,200 x 3,600 pixels. See the banner file setup guide.
2 x 4 vs the sizes either side
- Smaller (1.5 x 4, 2 x 3): fine for desks and doors, but most people find the text gets too small.
- 2 x 6 ft: the same height with 50% more length. Better for a 6-foot table or a slogan that won't fit. See 2 x 6 ft.
- 3 x 6 ft: more than twice the area and the jump to "readable from the street". See 3 x 6 ft.
Care and reuse
A 2 x 4 rolls into a tube the length of a broom handle. Roll it printed side out to avoid creasing the ink, keep it dry, and it will last several seasons indoors. See banner care and storage.

Questions people ask
How big is a 2x4 banner in inches?
A 2 x 4 ft banner is 24 x 48 inches (about 61 x 122 cm). Printers list height first or width first depending on the site, so check the orientation before you upload.
How many grommets does a 2x4 banner need?
Six, if grommets go in each corner and no more than 24 inches apart: three along each long edge. Four corner grommets are enough for light indoor use.
How much does a 2x4 vinyl banner cost?
On October 26, 2026, single 13 oz vinyl 2 x 4 ft banners ranged from $17.09 to $60.08 at the printers we checked, before shipping and tax. The median was $20.64.
Is a 2x4 banner big enough for a storefront?
For a window or door that people walk past, yes. For a sign read by drivers on the road, usually not; consider 3 x 8 ft or larger.
What resolution should a 2x4 banner file be?
Around 100 to 150 pixels per inch at full size: about 4,800 x 2,400 pixels at 100 ppi. Vector text and logos are best.
