The 2 x 6 ft banner: the table and market size

A 2 x 6 ft banner is 24 inches tall and 72 inches long, a 1:3 strip. That shape exists for one reason above all: the standard 6-foot folding table. Hung on the front of a table, a 2 x 6 covers the space from edge to edge and sits right in a shopper's line of sight. It's also the size that drugstores and office stores sell for same-day pickup, which makes it the go-to banner when you need one by tonight.

Where a 2 x 6 fits best

• The front of a 6-foot table at a farmers market, craft fair, school fair, job fair or vendor event. Folding tables are about 29 to 30 inches tall, so a 24-inch banner clears the ground.
• Narrow storefront spots: above a door, along the top of a window, under a fascia.
• Market booth side rails or the top of a canopy's back frame when you want to keep the back wall open.
• Long party banners: "Happy Retirement" or a name across a wall, mantel or doorway.
• Classroom, gym and stage edges: across the front of a stage or along a scorer's table.
• Sidewalk and parking-lot signs on a short fence or railing.

Because it's only 2 feet tall, the 2 x 6 is a close-range banner. For something people read from across a street, the extra height of a 3 x 6 ft banner matters more than the length.

Text size on a long, narrow banner

Height limits letter size. After margins, the main line on a 2 x 6 is usually 4 to 6 inches tall, with a small second line or none at all.

Layouts that work on a table

1. Logo left, name and product right. The logo square takes about 20 inches; the remaining 50 inches hold the words.
2. Centered single line. Best when the table will have products standing in front of either end.
3. Avoid the bottom 4 inches if the banner hangs on a table: tablecloth folds, bags and feet hide it.

Grommets

At corners plus no more than 24 inches apart, a 2 x 6 gets 8 grommets: four along each long edge, none needed on the 24-inch sides beyond the corners. On a table, the four corners are usually enough. On a fence or railing, use all eight so the banner doesn't bow in the middle.
