Editorial policy
How our guides are researched, written, checked and kept current. Last updated October 26, 2026.
Our standard
A guide is finished when a reader can make a good decision without having to search anywhere else: the right material, the right size, a file that prints correctly and a way to hang it that works. Every guide aims to answer the real question behind the search, show the trade-offs honestly and say clearly when the answer is “it depends”, and on what.
Research
- We rely on primary sources: manufacturer specification sheets, printer file-setup guidelines, published standards (for example ISO 216 paper sizes) and guidance from conservation institutions on light and storage.
- Rules of thumb, such as letter height per foot of viewing distance, are labeled as rules of thumb, not presented as laws.
- Specs vary between suppliers. Where they do, we give the common range and tell you what to ask the printer.
Writing and review
Guides are written and edited by K.R. Each guide is checked for accuracy, clarity and completeness before publication, and the illustrations are original drawings made for the guide. We don't publish thin pages or rewrite other sites' articles.
Independence
Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say in what we write. We don't accept payment, free products or gifts in exchange for coverage. Partner links are added after a guide is written and are always labeled. See the affiliate disclosure.
Updates and corrections
Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We review guides when materials, prices or practices change. If you find an error, email [email protected] with the page and the problem; we correct verified errors promptly and note significant changes on the page.
Safety and local rules
Some guides touch on ladders, wall anchors, outdoor installations and sign ordinances. We give general guidance only. Follow the hardware maker's instructions and check your city, HOA or landlord rules before you install anything outdoors or near a road.
