The 3 x 8 ft banner: room for the long words

A 3 x 8 ft banner is 36 inches tall and 96 inches long. It keeps the 3-foot height that makes a 3 x 6 readable from the street, and adds two feet of length. That sounds like a small change, but two feet is room for about four more characters at full size, and that is the difference between "GRAND OPENING" squeezed edge to edge and "GRAND OPENING" with breathing room, or between a 6-inch name and a 9-inch name.

It is also the banner that fits across the back of a standard 10 x 10 ft canopy, which makes it a staple for market vendors.

What 3 x 8 ft banners are used for

• Storefront fascias and awnings: the strip above a shop's windows is often 2 to 4 feet tall and 8 feet or more long.
• Canopy back walls: fits between the back legs of most 10 x 10 ft pop-ups with room for bungees. See what size banner for a 10 x 10 tent.
• Team and school banners: on a dugout or outfield fence, across a gym wall, behind a bench.
• Grand openings and long names: "GRAND OPENING", "NOW OPEN SUNDAYS", a long business name plus a short line.
• Church and school event banners on a fence along a road, where the length lets you add a date.
• Parade and walk banners carried on two poles by people walking side by side (order pole pockets on the short sides).

Text size and reading distance

At 10-inch bold capitals, each letter is roughly 6 to 7 inches wide, so 96 inches holds about 13 to 14 characters plus margins. That makes a 3 x 8 the smallest size where "GRAND OPENING" can run at 10 inches. For two-word business names and short slogans, you can push the main line to 12 inches. A good rule for long banners: the main line should fill at least 80% of the width. If it doesn't, either enlarge the letters or choose a shorter banner and save the money.

Fitting a storefront

1. Measure the flat area, not the whole fascia: stop at trim, lights, sign brackets and downspouts.
2. Allow 3 to 6 inches each side for fixings.
3. Check the height under any existing sign or above the window head.
4. Check the rules. Many cities limit temporary banner size, duration and placement, and some require a permit. Ask before you order.

If the space is longer than 8 feet, a 3 x 10 ft banner is the next common size; if it's shallower than 3 feet, look at 2 x 8 ft.

Grommets and wind

With grommets in the corners and no more than 24 inches apart, a 3 x 8 gets 12 grommets: five along each long edge and three on each short edge. A 3 x 8 on a storefront wall can manage with grommets every 2 to 3 feet; one on an open sports fence in wind needs every one of those 12, tied with bungees, or a mesh banner. Some printers default to fewer: BuildASign's optional grommet set on this size was three on top and three on the bottom.

On a long banner, also tie the middle grommets. A 96-inch banner held only at its corners sags in the middle and flaps, which is what eventually tears the vinyl.

What a 3 x 8 ft banner costs (October 2026)

Staples' 3 x 8 is its largest custom banner, and it can be picked up the same day at most stores when ordered by noon. The median of the five was $51.36, about $2.14 per square foot, the same per-foot rate as a 4 x 8. Method: banner price survey.

Layout tips for 36 x 96 inches

• Left-to-right flow: logo at the left end, name in the middle, a short line or arrow at the right.
• Keep the bottom 6 inches quiet on fences, where grass, bags and cars hide it.
• For teams, put the team name huge and the year or slogan small. People photograph team banners; keep faces and names away from grommets.
