The 3 x 6 ft banner: the all-rounder size, explained
Big enough to read from the street, small enough to hang alone. Uses, letter sizes, grommets, fence and wall fit, and what seven printers charged for a 3 x 6 on October 26, 2026.
If you only ever buy one banner size, it will probably be 3 x 6 ft. At 36 x 72 inches it has twice the 2:1 proportions of a 2 x 4 but more than twice the area, and that extra foot of height is what moves a banner from "read it when you're close" to "read it from across the street". It is still small enough for one person to roll up, carry under an arm and hang without a ladder in most places.
Printers know this: 3 x 6 ft is the default size on many banner configurators, and it shows up near the top of every most-ordered list we have seen.
What 3 x 6 ft banners are used for
- Business announcements: grand openings, sales, "Now open", "Under new management" on a storefront wall or fence.
- Events and fundraisers: car washes, church festivals, school carnivals, fun runs (start/finish line signs, sponsor boards).
- Sports: team banners on a dugout fence, senior-night banners, a sponsor on an outfield fence panel.
- Back walls for small booths: a 3 x 6 fits the back of a 10 x 10 canopy with lots of clearance, or the wall behind a table at an indoor fair.
- Graduations and birthdays at home: across a garage door, along a fence by the driveway.
- Construction and real estate: "Coming soon", "Now leasing" on a site fence where a 4 x 8 would be too much.
How far away can a 3 x 6 be read?
With 36 inches of height, you can set a main line of 7 to 9 inch capitals and still fit a supporting line underneath.
| Main-line capitals | Comfortable reading (1 in per 25 ft) | Glance reading (1 in per 10 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 in | about 150 ft | about 60 ft |
| 8 in | about 200 ft | about 80 ft |
| 10 in (short word, one line) | about 250 ft | about 100 ft |
In practice: a 3 x 6 reads well from across a two-lane street and from the far side of a parking lot, and works for drivers passing slowly on a local road. On a highway-speed road it is still on the small side. "GRAND OPENING" (13 characters) at 8-inch bold capitals needs roughly 70 inches, the whole width of a 3 x 6, so very long words push you to a 3 x 8 ft. Run your own numbers with the letter height calculator.
Fit: fences, walls and garage doors
- Chain-link fences: panels are usually 10 ft between posts; a 3 x 6 fits easily with ties to the fence fabric. Use bungees or zip ties at every grommet.
- Wood privacy fences: typical sections are 6 or 8 ft wide. On a 6-foot section, a 3 x 6 leaves no room for ties to the posts; screw through the grommets into the boards or choose 3 x 5 ft.
- Single garage doors (usually 8 or 9 ft wide, 7 ft tall): a 3 x 6 sits centered with room either side.
- Storefront walls: fine under a window or on a pier between windows. For the fascia above the windows, measure; many are longer and shallower and suit a 2 x 8 or 3 x 10.
Check your city's rules before hanging a temporary business banner. Many limit how long it can stay up and how large it can be.
Grommets and finishing
At corners plus no more than every 24 inches, a 3 x 6 gets 10 grommets: four along each long edge and three along each short edge, corners counted once. That's the layout in the drawing above. For a sheltered wall, corners plus one in the middle of each long edge (6 total) is often enough. On an open fence in wind, go to every 12 to 18 inches, or choose mesh.
Add a hem. A hemmed edge (folded and welded or sewn) is what stops a grommet tearing out of the vinyl in the first strong gust. On our October survey, UPrinting charged $4.31 extra for hemming on a 3 x 6 and $8.34 for hemming plus grommets every 2 feet. Several other printers include both.

Vistaprint had no 3 ft-tall standard size; its 2.5 x 6 ft was $23.99 on sale ($29.99 regular) without grommets. The median of the seven was $39.50, about $2.19 per square foot. Once you add hems and grommets to the cheaper no-finishing prices, the bottom four land within a few dollars of each other; the real differences are shipping, turnaround and whether finishing is included. Designing for 36 x 72 inches
- Main line, one supporting line, optional logo. That's the whole recipe.
- Put the main line in the top two-thirds. The bottom of a fence banner gets hidden by parked cars, bushes and people.
- Use a heavy font. At 8 inches tall, a bold sans reads twice as far as a thin script.
- Keep 2 inches clear at every edge for hems and grommets.
- Files at full size: 100 ppi (3,600 x 7,200 pixels) is plenty; vector is better. See banner file setup.
3 x 6 vs nearby sizes
- 3 x 5 ft: a foot shorter, easier on a 6-foot fence section or porch rail. See 3 x 5 ft.
- 3 x 8 ft: room for long words and a longer storefront. See 3 x 8 ft.
- 4 x 8 ft: the jump to roadside visibility. See 4 x 8 ft.

How many grommets does a 3x6 banner have?
Ten, with grommets in each corner and no more than 24 inches apart. Some printers use fewer (corners plus middles) and charge less.
How much is a 3x6 vinyl banner?
On October 26, 2026, a single 13 oz 3 x 6 ft vinyl banner cost $30.84 to $85.05 at the seven printers we checked, before shipping. The median was $39.50.
How far away can you read a 3x6 banner?
With 8-inch letters, about 200 feet for someone who stops to read and about 80 feet at a glance. It works across a street or parking lot.
Is 3x6 or 4x8 better for a storefront?
3 x 6 ft for walls people walk past or a slow street; 4 x 8 ft when drivers on a busier road are your main audience.
