The 3 x 5 ft banner: the home-celebration size
Graduations, birthdays, welcome-home banners and porch rails: why 36 x 60 inches suits a house so well, how to lay it out, and what four printers charged in October 2026.
A 3 x 5 ft banner is 36 x 60 inches. It is one of the four most-ordered banner sizes in printer sales data, and it has a very specific home: the front of a house. A 3 x 5 fits between porch posts, on one section of a wood fence, across a garage door with lots of margin, or on a balcony rail, and it matches the size of a standard house flag, so flag brackets and poles sized for flags can often hold it.
Its proportions are also different from the 1:2 "banner shape" of 2 x 4, 3 x 6 and 4 x 8. A 3:5 shape is closer to a photo or a poster, which is why it is so popular for graduation banners with a big portrait on one side.
When a 3 x 5 is the right choice
- Graduation banners with a senior photo and a name: the shape leaves room for a portrait and two or three lines of text. See our graduation banner guide.
- Birthday, baby shower and welcome-home banners on a porch, front door area or garage.
- Porch railings between posts that are 5 to 6 feet apart.
- One section of a privacy fence where the posts are 6 feet apart, leaving room to tie or screw at both ends.
- Pole-mounted banners from a house-flag bracket (order a pole pocket on the short side instead of grommets).
- Dorm and bedroom wall banners where 6 ft is too wide.
- Sports senior-night banners held by teammates or hung on a dugout fence.
It is less suited to business signs on a road, where the extra length of a 3 x 6 or 3 x 8 gives you a longer, bigger headline for not much more money.
Letter size and reading distance
The shape means you trade width for height. A 3 x 5 holds big text, but fewer characters per line.
| Main-line capitals | Comfortable reading (1 in per 25 ft) | Glance reading (1 in per 10 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 in | about 150 ft | about 60 ft |
| 8 in | about 200 ft | about 80 ft |
At 8-inch bold capitals, each letter takes roughly 5 to 6 inches of width, so a 60-inch banner holds about 9 or 10 characters on the main line. "CONGRATS" fits; "CONGRATULATIONS" does not, unless you drop to about 4-inch letters or break it over two lines. For a house set back 50 feet from the road, 6-inch letters are plenty for neighbors and passing cars on a residential street. Check yours with the letter height calculator.
A layout that works
The classic graduation or birthday 3 x 5 layout:
- Photo on the left third, cropped head and shoulders, at least 20 inches tall.
- Name across the top of the right two-thirds, as big as it will go.
- The occasion ("Class of 2027", "Happy 40th", "Welcome Home") under the name.
- School colors or a simple background, not a busy pattern behind text.
For the photo, start from the original phone file rather than a screenshot or a social media download. A modern phone photo (about 3,000 to 4,000 pixels on the long side) prints well at this size; see print resolution.
Grommets, pole pockets and hanging
With grommets at the corners and no more than 24 inches apart, a 3 x 5 gets 10 grommets (four along each 60-inch edge, three along each 36-inch edge). On a porch rail, the bottom grommets let you tie the banner down so it doesn't flap against the railing. On a sheltered wall, four corners plus one at the top middle is enough.
If you want to hang it from a house-flag pole, order a pole pocket along the 36-inch side instead. A 3-inch pocket fits most residential flag poles; measure yours first. Our grommets, hems and pole pockets guide explains pocket sizing.
What a 3 x 5 ft banner costs (October 2026)
Public prices for a single-sided 13 oz vinyl banner, quantity 1, checked on each printer's own configurator on October 26, 2026, before codes, shipping and tax.
| Printer | Price shown | Regular price | Finishing in that price |
|---|---|---|---|
| BuildASign | $31.52 | $42.02 (automatic 25% sale) | No grommets (optional) |
| BannerBuzz | $32.05 | $53.42 (automatic 40% sale) | Metal grommets |
| UPrinting | $33.58 | same | None (hem and grommets extra) |
| Signs.com | $52.07 | same | Welded hem, grommets every 2 to 3 ft |
The median was about $33, roughly $2.19 per square foot. Notice how close a 3 x 5 is in price to a 3 x 6 at the same printers: about $1 to $7 less. If a 3 x 6 fits your space, the extra foot is cheap. If it doesn't fit, a 3 x 5 is the right buy. All prices and methodology: banner price survey.
3 x 5 vs a 3 x 5 flag
People often search "3x5 banner" when they mean a flag, and vice versa. The difference:
- A banner is usually vinyl, printed on one side, with grommets or a pole pocket, made to be fixed flat to a wall, fence or frame.
- A flag is usually lightweight polyester, made to fly from a pole and move in the wind, often with a canvas header and two brass grommets on the short side.
If it will fly from a pole in the wind, buy a flag. If it will be tied to a railing or fence, buy a banner.
Make it last past the party
Graduation and birthday banners tend to become keepsakes. Take it down before a storm, wipe it clean, let it dry fully, and roll it printed side out around a tube. Kept out of sunlight, a 13 oz vinyl banner keeps its color for years. See banner care and storage.

Questions people ask
How big is a 3x5 banner in inches?
36 x 60 inches, about 91 x 152 cm: the same size as a standard house flag.
Is 3x5 a good size for a graduation banner?
Yes. It fits on a porch, fence or garage, and its shape leaves room for a large photo plus the graduate's name and class year.
How much does a 3x5 vinyl banner cost?
On October 26, 2026, single 13 oz 3 x 5 ft banners cost $31.52 to $52.07 at the four printers we checked, before shipping.
How many grommets on a 3x5 banner?
Ten with grommets in the corners and no more than 24 inches apart. Four corner grommets are enough on a sheltered wall.
Can a 3x5 banner hang from a flag pole?
Order it with a pole pocket on the short side and it can slide onto a house-flag pole, but it won't fly like a fabric flag. For a pole that flies in the wind, buy a polyester flag.
